| When Master Funakoshi combined some of the Okinawan systems of unarmed fighting into a single system, Karate, his students called it “Shotokan”. “Shoto” being a pseudonym master Funakoshi used as an author. Shotokan is rigidly codified. Kata being of utmost importance to proper technique. The essence of Shotokan’s teaching philosophy is to master techniques completely by training constantly and with dedication. An incomplete understanding of numerous techniques is discouraged. |
